Why would I need to buy Hand Sanitiser?
Hand Sanitisers contain alcohol or a non-alcohol antiseptic designed to kill the germs present on the skin. The alcohol or anti-septic works immediately and effectively to kill bacteria on the skin.
We are generally in a rush and don’t necessarily realise the importance of cleaning our hands. We shake our colleagues hands, use our phone, deal with money and don’t sanitize our hands!
But millions of us don’t wash our hands as often and as well as we should. A study done in South Korea indicated that 93.2% of 2,800 survey respondents did not wash their hands after coughing or sneezing.
However, cleaning our hands with sanitiser is backed up by science and is crucial in the prevention of the spread of infections. After all, our hands are responsible for spreading 80% of infections
Hand sanitiser and its benefits
It is always a good idea to have hand sanitiser in your ute, or tool box. It’s much more difficult when you sneeze to wash your hands than it is to use a hand sanitizer, This is especially true for tradesmen, as you’re out and about on the job site with limited facilities.
Businesses that encourage regular use of hand sanitizer tend to have healthier workers. In a study listed in BMC Infectious Diseases in 2010, office workers encouraged to use an alcohol hand sanitizer at least five times each workday were about two-thirds less likely to get sick than those who continued to just wash their hands.
Hand disinfection reduces the number of time people get sick for illnesses such as common cold, coughing, fever and diarrhoea
As hand santisers are so much more convenient and can be taken with you in your pocket or purse. You are more likely to clean your hands when you have hand sanitiser nearby.
What should I look for if I need to buy hand sanitiser?
Hand sanitiser comes in all sizes, from little 50 – 65ml sizes that are great for your pocket, to larger 250, and 500ml sanitiser great for use by your whole crew.
It is usually a liquid or gel, that contains an active ingredient like isopropyl alcohol, ethanol (ethyl alcohol), or n-propanol. A hand sanitizer requires at least 60% alcohol content and that’s why it is also commonly referred to as alcohol rub.
How to use hand sanitiser correctly:
1. Check your manufacturers instructions on how much you need to use of their product. Place the recommended amount in the palm of one hand.
2. Then you need to cover your whole hand by rub your hands together. Don’t forget to go in between your fingers, under your nails and your wrists covering all surfaces.
3. Once the handsanitiser goes dry, that’s when you know it is time to stop rubbing your hands!! This is usually around 20 seconds.
When to avoid hand sanitizers?
Soap and water is the best way of cleaning your hands if your hands are visibly dirty, or if you’ve touched chemicals. So if your hands are covered in concrete or mud, you are still best finding the closest facilities to wash your hands.
The World Health Organization recommends cleaning your hands:
- Before, during, and after preparing food.
- Before eating food.
- Before and after caring for a sick person.
- After using the toilet.
- After changing the diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet.
- After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
- After touching animal, animal feed, or animal waste.
- After touching garbage.
